0294.
Amsterdams Bont Bowl (clobbered). Blue and white china, decorated in Europe. Very nice decoration with a landscape, a figure on an ox and a cute sun. The bowl is marked in underglaze blue with one of the eight buddhist symbols: a pair of fish. In Buddhism the fishes symbolize happiness. They also represent fertility and abundance. Fish often swim in pairs, and in China they represent conjugal unity and fidelity, where a pair of fishes would often be given as a wedding present.
