0910 Very rare Chinese Porcelain Bowl with Dutch decoration Amsterdam Bont. Scene of Horses and Ice skating on the Zaan river close to Amsterdam. Dated 1740 and made to commemorate the very cold winter of 1740. An inscription reads.
“Anno 1740 is het een zeer koude winter geweest zoo dat de paarden langs de zaan 63 dage hebben gelopen en is het op den 9: 10 en 11 januari zoo kout geweest al gij mensche geheuge niet is geweest. En maakte 3.5 duim ijs in een nagt. En is 5 graade kouder geweest als int jaar 1709”
it translates to something like:
“Anno 1740 its been a very cold winter, the horse a long the Zaan have walked [on the ice] for 63 days and on the 9th, 10th and 11th of january it has been colder than it was in peoples remembrance. And 3.5 thumb of ice was made in one night. And it was 5 degrees colder than in the year 1709”
