The prunus blossom is heightened in opaque white enamel, a probable indicator of an English origin. The treatment of the painting is reminiscent of a group of Staffordshire saltglazed wares enamelled in a similar palette. Formal roses feature prominently in a number of these saltglazed pieces and may have a Jacobite significance. The decoration of some early Bow porcelain is also related, in particular a vase in the Freeman collection illustrated by Adams and Redstone, Bow Porcelain, colour pl. D and Anton Gabszewicz, The Freeman Collection, fig 9 (another view).
