In the center three merchant ships encircled by belt inscribed QUARTO CENTENARIO DO DESCOBRIMENTO DA INDIA beneath the arms of King Dom Carlos I of Portugal, all within colorful enamelled borders
This plate was an order from the portuguese king Carlos l to celebrate 400 years of Vasco da Gama arrival to India by ship in 1498. The caravel in the center is similar in all the pieces, the decoration around is always diferent.
