Provenance: Dore and Rees – Collection George Withers (1946-2023MORGAN impaling HUNT Chien Lung c. 1742 The arms are of Morgan _of Breconshire or Monmouthshire, Gules three castles argent, impaling Hunt, Per pale argent and sable, a saltire counter- changed, on a canton of the second, a hion passant of the first. The crest is almost certainly that of the Morgans of Llangeney in Brecon or Pen- creek in Monmouthshire, A dragon’s head and neck erased vert, holding in the mouth a bloody hand proper. The history of the family of Morgan of Llangeney is given in A History of the County of Brecknock by Theophilus Jones, published there in two volumes in 1805 and I8o9. The Hunts are a cadet branch of Hunt of Boreatton and Longnor in Shropshire who bear Per pale argent and sable a saltire counterchanged,. The Hunt arms with this canton were borne by a wealthy fishmonger of London in the eighteenth century for whose daughter this may have been made.
